1950's de Havilland Vampire Italian Air Force Stormo

A section of wing aileron from a de Havilland Vampire paints with Cavallino Rampante (Prancing Horse) of the 4th Stormo Aerobatic team.

The Vampire was one of the early jets in use by the RAF in the late 40's and 50's.

The Vampire was sold ( and licensed) to many airforces in the 50's. The Italian Air Force purchased several aircraft and also license built ca. 150 in Italy.

This is a section from the aileron and has multiple part numbers as well as a small brass identification plate.
We have attached the drawing from the Vampire manual that shows the aileron in situ. The aileron is D0013134A and this is from the Left Side.

It came to us painted only in yellow primer so this is a NEW item from the stores and was never issued or flown.

We have painted it in aluminium silver paint and then painted it as the prancing horse that was painted onto the tail of Italian Air Force ( Aeronautica Militaire) of the 4th Stormo.

in 1950 the Italian Air Force restarted a display flying team and initially used Vampires from 4th Stromo which had this crest painted on the tail of the aircraft.

The markings are derived from the family crest of the Baracca family as Count Francesco Baracca was the top Italian Airforce ace in WW1.

The crest was used by the 4th Stormo and the 9th Stormo. Only the 2nd, 4th and 6th Stormo flew the Vampire.

The panel measures 40.5 cm tall, 39cm deep and 10 cm wide .
