Westland Wessex

Westland Wessex helicopter tail rotor blade dated 1975.

All original paint from when it was in service. Some scratches and slight dents as expected from something that is nearly 50 years old.

Mounted on a bespoke aluminum mount onto a polished perspex block so that it stands as a sculptural piece. The blade can be easily removed from the block if needed.

The Wessex helicopter was made by Westland in the UK but from a Sikorsky US design where it was known as the H-34. We know this is Wessex from the part number shown on one side of the blade.

The Wessex was used by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force and was also used as a Search and Rescue Helicopter. There are a few touches of yellow paint on this blade.

We purchased this at an auction house and have no details on the aircraft it came from.

The Wessex was used as anti submarine, troop carrier and general workhorse. They were retired in 2003.

Fifty five Wessex saw combat use in the Falklands e.g. Humphrey from HMS Antirm that sank an Argentine Submarine in South Georgia as described in the book Operation Paraquat.

The blade measures 123 cm/ 4 foot tall.
